10 Bed Myths That Simply Aren't True

When it comes to buying a new bed or mattress, there's no shortage of advice online. Unfortunately, not all of it is accurate.

Over the years, we've heard plenty of misconceptions that can leave people choosing the wrong bed or replacing one sooner than necessary. Here are ten of the most common bed myths—and the truth behind them.

    1. A firmer mattress is always better for your back

Myth: The firmer the mattress, the better it is for back support.

    Truth: Not necessarily.

A mattress that is too firm can create pressure points, while one that's too soft may not provide enough support. The best mattress is one that keeps your spine in a natural position while supporting your body comfortably. The right level of firmness depends on your weight, sleeping position and personal preference. You can read our mattress guide here.

    2. Ottoman beds are difficult to lift

Myth: Ottoman beds are heavy and awkward to open.

Truth: Modern ottoman beds use gas-lift pistons to assist with lifting, making them surprisingly easy to open. Once your mattress is in place, the lift mechanism is balanced to work with its weight, so accessing the storage underneath requires much less effort than many people expect. You can read more here.

    3. You only need to replace your mattress when it falls apart

Myth: If it still looks okay, it doesn't need replacing.

Truth: Most mattresses should be replaced after around 7–10 years, depending on the type and how well they've been cared for. Over time, support and comfort gradually reduce, even if the mattress still looks in good condition.

    4. A bigger bed won't fit in your bedroom

Myth: You should buy the smallest bed that physically fits.

Truth: Many people underestimate how much difference an extra 15cm or 30cm of sleeping space makes. As long as you still have enough room to move comfortably around the bed, choosing the next size up can significantly improve your sleep.

Always measure carefully before deciding. Our website includes all the measurements for all our beds. Make sure you check the eternal measurements too,

    5. All divan beds are the same

Myth: Every divan base is identical.

Truth: Divan beds vary enormously in build quality, storage options, fabrics and construction. Some are handmade with reinforced timber frames, while others are designed as more budget-friendly options. The quality of the base is just as important as the mattress that sits on top.

    6. Memory foam mattresses are too hot

Myth: All memory foam mattresses make you overheat.

Truth: Older memory foam products gained this reputation, but modern mattresses often include cooling foams, breathable covers and open-cell technology that helps improve airflow. Many hybrid mattresses combine memory foam with pocket springs for even better temperature regulation. You can check out our full range of memory foam mattresses here.

    7. You don't need a headboard

Myth: A headboard is purely decorative.

Truth: While a headboard certainly completes the look of a bedroom, it also protects your wall, helps keep pillows in place and provides a comfortable backrest when sitting up to read or watch television.

    8. You can put any mattress on any bed

Myth: Every mattress works with every bed base.

Truth: Some mattresses are better suited to particular bases. For example, heavier mattresses may not be suitable for every ottoman lift mechanism, while adjustable beds require compatible mattresses that can flex with the movement. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations before buying. If you have any doubts then you can here at beds on legs we are always happy to offer advice.

    9. A bed should last forever

Myth: If the frame isn't broken, there's no reason to replace it.

Truth: A well-made bed frame can last for many years, but everyday wear, moving house, and changing storage needs may mean it's time for an upgrade. If your bed creaks excessively, feels unstable or no longer meets your needs, replacing the base could improve both comfort and practicality.

    10. The most expensive bed is automatically the best

Myth: Spending more always means better sleep.

Truth: Price doesn't always equal comfort. The best bed is the one that suits your body, your bedroom and your budget. A carefully chosen mid-range bed that meets your needs is often a better investment than an expensive model that isn't right for you.

    The Bottom Line

Buying a new bed is a long-term investment, so it's worth separating fact from fiction.

Everyone sleeps differently, and there is no single bed or mattress that's perfect for everyone. By understanding how different beds are designed and choosing one that suits your individual needs, you'll be far more likely to enjoy years of comfortable, restful sleep.
