This is because we associate a bigger bed with a bigger space. Indeed, it's difficult for your eye to discern a double bed from a small double. In fact, this is a trick that designers use in show homes to make potential buyers think a bedroom is bigger than it is!

Whilst the obvious colour to make a small bedroom look bigger is white, many people find this a little too stark.
