Ever climbed into bed on a night but your brain is playing ping pong with intrusive thoughts? Sometimes you can be dog tired, but your pesky mind just won’t switch off. Before you know it, you’re tossing and turning all night and your clock is showing way past your bedtime. Indeed, many of us experience times when the stress of day to day living means we just can’t get off to the land of nod. Whilst the occasional night of restless sleep can be a nuisance, long term poor sleep can have severe consequences on both physical and mental health. Here at Beds on Legs we’ve got 5 great tips to help you unwind on a night. With a bit of luck, you’ll be sleeping like a log in no time.
Exercise is a great way to boost endorphins and clear a chattering mind. What’s more you can reap other physical benefits too. The key with exercise is do something you really enjoy. If you’re hitting the gym and it feels like a chore then you won’t stay the distance. Therefore, if you try an exercise and you’re not feeling it then move on to another activity. However, we would advise exercising no later than 7pm on an evening as you may find yourself so energised that you can’t unwind on a night.
Meditation is no longer consider the preserve of just those free-spirited souls. Indeed, numerous people from businessmen to stay at home mums are extolling the benefits of meditation and how it can help you unwind on a night. Science has proved that meditation is a wonderful tool for calming the mind and what’s even better is that it’s free for everyone. However, we understand that not everyone can just start meditating like a Buddhist monk and therefore it might be worth downloading an app. Indeed, there are some fantastic apps out there that can set you on the right track.
Ok we know you may need a surgical operation to remove yourself from your phone…but ditching technology at least an hour before bed is a great way to unwind on a night. Whilst you may feel like scrolling through Insta is chilling you out, unfortunately the opposite is true. We know it’s hard to implement this one but believe us your mind will thank you for it.
Thanks to the advancement of technology many of us have lost the art of reading a good book. However, if you're serious about wanting to unwind on a night then snuggling up with a paperback could be just the ticket. In fact, some studies suggest that reading before bed is the quickest way to relax.
Many of us feel like we are being pulled in every direction. From family commitments to work commitments we can often end up feeling stretched to the limit. The perfect antidote to this is implementing a bit of ‘me’ time on a regular basis. This basically means putting yourself first and allowing yourself the time to do something you find pleasurable. This could be anything from a hot bath to a spot of yoga. If you make it part of your schedule then it could be one of many tools that can help you unwind on a night.
