Do You Need to Break in a New Mattress? What to Expect and Tips to Get Comfortable

A new mattress should feel like an improvement, but it can take a little time to get used to it. If your new bed feels firmer or simply different from the mattress you have slept on for years, you may wonder: do you need to break in a mattress?
In many cases, a short adjustment period is normal. Your mattress may also settle slightly with regular use, depending on its construction and comfort layers. Here is what to expect, how to help it settle naturally and when it may be time to ask for advice.

Do you need to break in a new mattress?

You do not need to do anything special to break in a mattress. Sleep on it as you normally would and give yourself time to adjust. A new mattress can feel different because its comfort layers have not been used, and because your body has become accustomed to the support and shape of your old bed.
Some mattresses may soften or settle a little with regular use, but the amount varies by model and materials. A mattress should not need to be forced into shape, and a short adjustment period should not be confused with a fault or a mattress that does not suit you.

How long does it take to get used to a new mattress?

There is no single break-in period that applies to every mattress or sleeper. Give it a few weeks of normal use as a starting point, and follow the care guidance supplied with your mattress. Your sleep position, comfort preferences and how worn your previous mattress was can all affect how quickly the new one feels familiar. Try not to judge it after just one night. If you are still uncomfortable after a few weeks, check that the mattress is on a suitable base and review the seller’s trial, exchange or return terms promptly.

Tips for settling into a new mattress

Use it regularly. Sleeping on the mattress each night gives it a chance to settle naturally and helps you adjust to its feel.

Check the bed base. Make sure your frame or divan is in good condition and suitable for the mattress. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on slats and support.

Rotate it only if advised. Some mattresses should be rotated head-to-toe; others should not. Only turn a mattress over if it is designed to be double-sided.

Follow unpacking instructions. If your mattress arrives rolled or vacuum-packed, give it the time and space recommended by the manufacturer to expand. Air the room if there is a new-product smell.
Use a mattress protector. A well-fitting protector helps keep the surface clean while you get used to your new bed.
Avoid trying to force it. Walking, jumping or bending the mattress will not speed up the process and could damage it.

What if your new mattress still feels uncomfortable?

First, check the basics: is it the correct size, on a suitable base and set up according to its care instructions? Then consider whether its feel matches your preferences. “Firm” and “soft” describe comfort, but a mattress also needs to provide support that feels right for you.
If the mattress is damaged, has an obvious dip or remains uncomfortable, contact the retailer and check the relevant trial or return terms. Keep any packaging or paperwork that the retailer asks you to retain.

Choosing a mattress you will love

The best mattress is one that suits your size requirements, preferred feel and sleeping habits. When comparing options, look at the mattress dimensions, firmness description, spring or foam construction and the care instructions. If you are unsure, ask for help before choosing.
