How To Make Moving House Less Stressful

Moving house can turn even the most composed adult into a gibbering wreck. It's no secret that moving house regularly features in the top ten stressful life events. However don't be tempted to bury your head in the sand! There are lots of things that you can put in place to make the whole process a lot easier. With some clever organisation plus lots tea and biscuits, moving house can run as smooth as a well oiled machine.

    Make A To Do List

There's nothing like a To Do List to stop your head from whizzing around like it's on a merry go round. The simple act of listing what needs to be done on paper can soothe the mind and give you a sense of order. Plus you don't need to worry about forgetting things and it can serve as a check list.

    Declutter

Moving house is the perfect time to declutter. Decluttering can be a therapeutic process and you will feel lighter and brighter after it. Rule number one, if you don't use it, need it or love it then get rid of it! Remember that this process should be started well in advance of your moving date. You don't want to be nipping to the charity shop as the removals van turns up!

    Think Inside The Box

When packing your prized possessions, don't be tempted to just throw everything in boxes as quickly as possible. This is a one way trip to disaster at the other end. Instead pack each room individually and label the boxes accordingly. So for example all Kitchen items will go into a box labelled 'Kitchen'. This means that when the big day comes you can place boxes in their relevant rooms and you'll feel super proud of your organised self too.

A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed

Even if you're the most organised person in the world it still doesn't hurt to get extra help. Don't be tempted to go it alone as you will just become overwhelmed. Instead get friends and family involved and reward them with Takeaway and a cheeky beverage to celebrate when it's all done.

    Hire A Removals Company Wisely

Moving house is a costly process and it can feel tempting to save money when you can. However, when it comes to removals company it can cost you in the long run if you don't go with a reputable company. Only hire a company with a proven reputation. Don't be lured in by the promises of people you've never heard of, just to save a couple of quid.

    Get Plenty Of Sleep

You might find it difficult to get to sleep at this stressful time but lack of sleep can really magnify the stress that you already have. So try to relax before you go to bed, have a nice bubble bath and lay off the alcohol. Save the vino for the day you've moved in, then you can really enjoy it!

    Pack An Emergency Kit

When moving house it is always a good idea to have a box that has all the essential items that you'll want quick access too. This might include toiletries, a change of clothes and for the majority of us some tea bags and a kettle!

Book Time Off For The Big Move

It's a great idea to book a few days off around your moving date. This will give you some welcome time to start sorting everything out without the added pressure of your normal working life.

    Set Up Your Utilities

Once you've made the big move, before you get settled make sure you take all your meter readings. This will ensure you won't be paying more than you have to. It is also advisable to make sure you know where the stopcock is straight away. There's nothing more stressful than trying to locate that in an emergency!
